Me and my dad have been having this debate for months now...Is car depreciation a running cost or not.

He says it is, but I disagree, based on a running cost being something you have to pay out every week/month

Do you consider it to be a running cost?

yes, i bet my car will depreciate quite a bit being an 07 but don't bother me as i'll just trade it in for a new reg in 12 months anyway.

depends how you use the car tbh, if it's kept clean and not much mileage done then it wouldn't depreciate more than one with average muileage/ average condition

Technically, from an accounting point of view, depreciation is a running cost yes.

But my arguement is that its not a running cost because you don't physically take x amount of £'s out of your wallet every month and hand it over...I'd say it's more like part of the cost of changing cars

If you look at magazine test of new cars, they often give you a pence per mile cost for 3 years, that takes depreciation in to account.

ina way it is a running cost, because parts depreciate all the time and need replacing, bulbs, tyres, brake pads and discs etc.. might not be a monthly thing, but i suppose it depends on how old your car is

Yes I was looking again and was put off by people wanting 10k for a 7 year old car.

There will be 2 or 3k off that the 1st time it snows.

I look at it this way now, i use my car for work and for social. There is no point in spending thousands of pounds on moding it or going out and buying a new car every year. All cars will end up the same after a few months and i've got nothing for the money spent. I'll just use my car until it starts to fall apart and save the money in the bank so when someone hits it, i blow it up or starts wearing out i can go out and buy a new one.

One day i'll own an old Mini Cooper and VW Camper which i won't use daily and be kept in a garage. Then i will spend thousands of pounds restoring them.
