Come will say 2 weeks is a bare minimum.... but I'd still rather a week in Oz than stay here

1 weeks too short for the cost.

I wouldn't really want to go for less than 2 TBH, but better than nothing

Agreed, 1 week would mess you up too. Takes at least 1-2 days to adjust to the time difference. I went over there and was falling asleep at about 4pm

Booked tickets direct with Etihad Airways a very new company who have only been running a year but have had great reviews and a reasonable price considering i have left it pretty late to book.
Flight is on a new Airbus a340-600 which i think is the longest commercial plane in service.

Probably be in Cairns for xmas and sydney for new years.

cairns doesnt really have a beach to shout home about, more of an inner city lagune/pool area. You need to be on the beach xmas day!!

thats about 20 mins drive north on the way to port douglas(which is also a beautiful beach - 4 miles long), if you intend on driving thats fine, i thought you meant one you could just walk onto from your accomodation.
