How fast does it take to heat up? The one in my mates SXI takes ages, and when it does pop, its not red hot.

Tried mine today, within 4 seconds there was a wee bit of smoke, pulled it out, red hot. Surely it cant be good for the wiring heating it up that fast?

The heat is generated as the cigarette lighter is just a straight short circuit. The element in the plug is a lot thinner though so it'll heat up quicker than the large wire that is used to supply the socket. Basically you don't want to do this ever, but in the cars case the short is not present for long enough to damage the proper wiring.

Ahh, i see, its just that mine went so fast, and it started smoking pretty badly before it even clicked off, so I pulled it out.

Yet the one in my mates SXI is really slow?

Would probably depend on how much charge is in the battery, whether there is any regulation on the supply, condition of the plug etc.
