8v engines which are lighter, they also have lighter seats, carpet, no leather crap in the doors, no PAS, no airbag, no sunroof, no airbag, lighter wheels etc etc. 106 GTI might have the edge in a straight line marginally but you said it yourself, on a track there is nothing in it and there is also a bigger cool factor. Joining rallye register was also one of the best things I ever did, its a confined community but everyone has the right idea, I love the exclusiveness. Paul did you use your serious face when you typed that?

Just strip a Gti and you have the same as a Rallye, but more power?
I prefere the general way a 16v engine works... Harder you push the engine, the more it gives right to the redline.
It means I can hit 70 mph in 2nd at 7800 rpm (if I wanted to) and it would be still accelerating hard at the point I changed gear
In an 8v, any more acceleration in a gear after about 5000 rpm is a waste as it's losing power.
Thanks to the type of cam I have in my car, I have power on tap from about 2-2.5k rpm anyway, so I've got low down and a mid range... but also pulls hard to redline.
Where as an 8v rallye, will seem nippy at first and then run out of steam...
Butler this makes me wonder if you've ever been in a Gti?

Wrong website for a 106 question! however it looks like a smart car, clean and the engine is  but its bright yellow 
it would probs be even faster without all the crap thats in it as well

I'm sick of people banging on about 1.3 8v rallye lol... It's good for a 1.3 8v yes... but otherwise it's fairly pants.
I raced one down the strip and it did I think a 16.8 (or worse?)

Agree with this fella, the Rallye aint all that even the 1.6 8v aint exactly a stormer, great cars though but GTi everytime for me

Paul, the Rallye isnt built for the strip! I dont think you could be more wrong saying they lose power after 5k, ive only found they are the opposite. at 5k the power band kicks in and it pulls right to the limiter. I have been in a GTI, I drove my friends VTS before, it was quick, no quicker than my old S2 though, and it wasnt standard even still. Yes you can strip a GTI but its still front heavy even if by a small margin. The S1 is also another 40kg lighter.
Makes me wonder if youve been in an 8v rallye Paul?
