Doctor-Patient confidentiality... GAY!!

Brother was admitted to hospital last night, suspected meningitis... rash, temperature, etc etc... He didn't even remember who the folks were... didn't know where he was, proper scary shit!

They put him straight on HDU ward, gave him loads of antibiotics, drugs, took blood, even then discussed about a lumbar puncture to drain fluid from the spine. BUT it was 2am, and the folks came home (fair enough, not like they could do anything there as it was) but said would ring back next day...

Mum rang back today, said who she was asked for an update, how he was, if they did the lumbar puncture... They just said 'Oh sorry we can't tell you anything due to Doctor-Patient confidentiality, and that she didn't believe my mum was who she said she was and just slammed the phone down...' WTF??

Rang up again, same response - absolute fucking joke! Even tried explaining about my nan and the fact until we know whats what we can't even go round see how she is and sort her tea out as she's not good as it is. Still no joy. They just said visiting is 6:30pm till 8pm and to come down then.

So now we have no idea as to whats up with him, if it is meningitis or not, and because of this we can't see to my nan and sort her tea out so she's now being fucked over because of some balshy stuck up sarky bitch of a ward matron. FFS

I can understand the hospitals situation, in so far as much as a voice on the phone could be anyone and they're not wanting to take risks - after all if a new reporter or something phoned up and pretended to be a family member then splashed a story about your bro all over the paper I guess you'd be less than happy - and quite right!
But you'd think there would be something that could be done to confirm identity? full name, address and D.o.B - if they match up then fine, if they don't then no information is passed back from the hospital.

Hope your bro get's well soon m8

i know steve, to an extent I understand also, but the thing is...

She asked about ringing back next day, said fine
They asked her loads of questions (date of birth, relationship to bro, what time they were there last night, bro's date of birth)
Then buggered off for about 10 mins while putting her on hold
then just said bugger off

How olds your brother? What time did you phone? If you phone back ask to speak to one of the higher nurses.

My Dad was in hospital all last week. Phoned up number of times and had no problems, nurses were really helpful and even rang us a number of times too to keep us informed when we couldnt be there.

TBH though this was a hospital with only 32 rooms so not like its really busy

He's 26 (same as me), but his mental age is more like 15-16...

Were gona ring up again later on and ask to speak to the duty nurse or something, least then we might get some sort of answer

although...when my Grandad was in an NHS hospital just before he died I rang up and they even put the Doc on to tell me how he was doing.

So guess it depends on who you get and what mood they are in aswell

Errrrrrrrr. perfectly right and legal.

Its against the law (Data Protection Act) to release any information.

Anyone can have basic details, DoB etc... The nurse was completly right to do it.

When you go to hospital, i take it they are sitting around? Remember, they are on f-all pay and work 12 hour+ shifts. Give them a break.

Hope your brother pulls through and gets better, but don't take your frustration out on the person doign their job correctly.

tbh I would just go to the hospital and demand info. Am not taking shit from no doctors or nurses after the way I got treated with my dad. They are all badgers, I have met a few nice nurses but they all seem to be up their own arse. My rant over. I will probably get shit now haha

If you talk to the actual doctor they generally will tell u n e thing, but nurses etc get in shit for telling who could be randomers private stuff.
