E46 M3 or a Porsche 911 C2 (996).
Which would you have and why?
Get a newer M3 for the money (£25-30k).

if you have that budget you should be looking at the E46 M3 CSL
I would have that over most cars on the road due to the pedigree and the noise they make. Unlike any other car at that price range!

Only ever been a passenger but I find them too harsh for everyday use and that price range is at the bottom of the market for the CSL or the top of the market for a well specced standard M3.

True, I suppose it depends on your needs and wants from a car.
Of course a 'normal' M3 has a lovely noise aswell!
On a car as new as that and with it being a M car the parts will be the same price as porka parts at a guess.
Its just the fact that you are getting a top of the range BMW or a middle of the range Porka for the same money.
Its your choice at the end of the day!

to be honest, these are the 2 cars that i would upgarde to if i came into £10k suddenly!
Think woulf have to be the porsche though, drove a 996 in january and it was awesome, the accelleration the handling the looksand the noise (basicly the whole package)
Although the csl has all these also! for me the porker has the edge, is just a bit more special and more of a "sports car" imo...

yes I agree both cars mentioned will be expensive to run and parts equally expensive
For me it has to be the porsche and will lose less value when you decide to change

Will be my only car but not huge mileage. I live/work in the city centre and so it'll be used at weekends, shopping, occasional work use, pretty much everything.
Have done a lot of research on running costs and they'll be about the same, both will have main dealer warranty.
911 seems more 'special' but its an older car.

Neither car appeals to me (but each to their own so please dont take offence by this) If I was going to choose I would def go for the Porsche tho, as you say, its just that bit more special!!
Ive got a similar problem at the moment - Ultima v Noble v Sagaris (Ultima is in the lead at the moment tho!)

Stu - thats no problem mate - get the ultima.
back on topic though, Id take the porker too - imo rarer, prettier and it will probably be worth more when I trade it in.

M3 for me, only because it'll be newer and better equipped.

Not sure what sort of 'equipment' I'd be interested. Not bothered about sat nav, tv, SMG boxes, xenons etc.
The 911 would just feel great.

Nice decision to have to make either way!

If i had that choice, id also be able to afford the insurance for whatever really. So with that in mind id have a 20k M3 and would employ someone to fit me a newer M3 engine. The v8 monster. That would be the last of your 30k i guess tho : )

911 hands down. Driven a few M3's and was very disappointed with the performance and overall feel. Just didn't excite me where a 911 does! - More pedigree too.
