My dad being dad thinks I should just get a standard exhaust system from an exhaust centre (my centre section is blowing) but me being a yougster wants a slightly nicer system where I may see some nice gains in sound and slight performance; should I get a performance system (magnex?) or am I better off sticking with standard? Thanks

If he gets a "performance" centre section at 17 and declares it to the insurance it'll go up

Because modifying a car from standard puts your insurance up, and at 17 it won't be cheap to insure a standard car. If he can afford the silly price hike then fine, get the stainless exhaust. Not my car/money.
