Japanese cars in general to be honest. I could mention loads of cars, but at 18 you'll struggle!

a 1.8 astrs would be a good choice imo. Although it would depend what you want from a car as it would be "more grown up" then something like a vtr etc. However for preformance compared to insurance they are pritty hard to beat

will probs have about £5k to spend. wont be doing much to the car anyway probs just wheels lowered exhaust. gavin i know what you mean about the astra being a bit more grown up but with the right mods i think it wouldnt be to bad. wat kind of money do the 1.8's usually go for? also they reliable cars? puntomk2b i will have a look at them mate, cheers.

Yer that will be quite cheap to insure. Ive test driving a 1.8 astra and was very impressed. I think you can get tidy ones for about 3.5k with the irmy body kit etc.
From what i have heard they are nice reliable cars with just a few sensor problems like most vaux's but nothing major

not sure myself, but check out astrasport as they were helpful to me when i was thinking of buying one.
Ive heard there were two different 1.8 engines with the later ones giving more power and therefore been the better choice. these were the ones with the fly by wire throttle or something if irc

am now thinking about going down the 106 gti route?! dont know why but after being told about them they seem like a good choice, quick, light, easy to mod. have done a few gearboxes on them so they must be a weakpoint on them but anything else i should look out for on them?

All id say is test drive one first. They are nice and nippy and feel very chuckable. But i hated the driving position and pedals. However if you can get along with these id get one as they are a basis for a very good fun car with lots of potential for mods if you want in the future
