my g/f step dad is selling his private number plates but has only give me the paper which has the the number on, he said when he traded in his old car he left them on the car. he wants me to ebay them so is the retention document is wot u need?

he left his private plate on the car he sold? surely they aint his anymore then?

you need to put the plate on retention before you transfer the ownership of the vehicle, you get the retention document

leaving the plastic plates on the vehicle doesn't always mean you have lost your plates jus means you never removed them off the vehicle

thats what i was trying to ask, if he didnt put it on retention and sold the car then, as the plate is registered to that vehicle, he has sold the plate too.

yes., unless the new keeper is understanding and will sign the documents to transfer the plate onto the new vehicle

if that is the case then the owner of the vehicle is also the owner of the registration

plates can still be put on retention

could try and back date the retention application then post it off, i would expect a phone call from the dvla tho

If the new keeper is happy for it, you put it into retention in their name with the former keeper as the nominee
This relies on the new keeper sending the certificate on, but if they really arent bothered about the plate then im sure they will
