1) Attempt a burnout in the water patch under the tower when the start line is clear of the previous pairing. How you do this will depend on whether your car is front or rear wheel drive. This will help warm and clean the tyres. Don't attempt to burn out in 4WD cars unless you know what you are doing.
2) Roll up to the start line slowly when the starter beckons you forward. Try and stay roughly level with your opponent.
3) As your front wheels reach the start line, a pair of orange bulbs will light on your side of the starting "tree" This means you are "pre-staged" and you are just inches away from being in the right position.
4) Roll forward a fraction more, and another pair of orange bulbs will light below the first pair. This means that you are in the right starting position.
5) When both you and your opponent have all staging lights lit, you are ready to go, so lift you engine revs, and get ready to drop the clutch..the starting tree lights will flash orange and then immediately green. Now is the time to GO! GO! GO!
6) Don't worry if you mess it up- the starting official will help you do the right thing. keep an eye on him for direction.
7) You can collect your timing slip from the signing on office. There is no charge for collecting your print-outs.

the burnout thing is pretty pointless unless you in something quite powerful
or have tyres that become really sticky when warm, normal road tyres wont be muchly affected

The timer doesn't start until your wheels move from the staged sections.

If you're using normal road tyres, a burnout will make the tyres less grippy and your time will be slower.

If you have cold tyres a burnout will warm them up!

Yes, but road tyres don't need to be at 60 degrees like slicks do.
In the middle of summer, you don't need to warm your tyres up....

Also unless you have a LSD its pointless as you will only warm up one tyre lol

also you look a little foolish trying to wheelspin a 1.6 corsa, when a 1000bhp drag car has just layed a 1 inch thick sheet of rubber from burning out.
people wont impressed by your little "screech" and it certainly wont make any difference to your time

Each lane starts with a water box. This is an area of the track that is kept constantly wet. This is for dragsters to reverse into and spin their back wheels until the whole car disappears in a cloud of smoke. If you have a road car on road tyres drive around the water box, don’t drive through it or do a burnout in it. Road tyres will pick up loads of water in the sipes on the tread. This then causes lots of wheelspin for you when you start, and worse, leaves water on the startline for following cars. You will not be a popular chappie!

Road tyres don't perform as well when they're warm, whatever RWYB.com says.

I remember the commentator bloke at Trax saying that all the people weaving about warming their tyres up were silly, as did the Santa Pod one when I was last up there.
