sorry this is a very basic question
whats the difference between a :
-red top
-XE
-LET
I understand a LET has a turbo and the other two dont
but apart from that what differences are there

red top is a C20XE, which is often just referred to as an XE.
Therefore, there is no difference at all between a red top or an XE, unless you are talking about the 20XE (without the 'C') which did not have a catalytic convertor.

XE as in C20XE or just 20XE is a "red top" engine.

the LET obviously has a few internal changes too due to the turbo, like low compression pistons, but basically the same engine otherwise.
