you need to take all the paint off them and polish the metal underneath.

oh i'm guessing i rub down the alloys with sandpaper

Might be better to use paint stripper as sandpaper will scratch the metal hich will be more difficult to polish up afterwards, paintstripper will leave the metal untouched as it were.

last time i polished a set of wheels...paint stripper wouldnt take the etch off...so i had to use sandpaper....
