Happened last year, some chump thought he could do the marathon with the attitude of "i'll run a few miles and walk a few to recover then run again"

He didnt train at all BTW

CHUMP!

he died at the end and he was 21

I've done a 10km, and that wasn't too challenging, did it in like 48 mins. But I must admit, when your running non stop for 48 mins you just want it to end and you keep thinking 'surely it can't be much further' and it is... It's a LOT further lol... felt like it was never ending. So just kept slogging through.

Now marathon is like 4 times that distance! so pretty hard graft.

I'd recommend anyone thinking of doing the marathon to do a 10k RUN (not walk) see how you do, if you can get under an hour, then try a half marathon (20k run) ... if you can manage that ok in reasonable time, then try for the marathon!

You'd be an idiot to straight try for the marathon, I think most people see times like 3 hrs 24 and don't realise how far it is!

Think about it like this. Go now, put on your trainers and run at a fairly fast pace (say 7mph) for as long as you can...

Most of you would drop out / stop for a breather after 5 mins.

Some more may make it past 10 mins.

Some may make it past 15/20 mins non stop.

but probably most won't make it past say an hour non stop.

And the marathon is pretty much 4 hours NON STOP or longer.

I'd honestly recommend just setting yourself that challenge of running as far as you can (before Stopping) - before you even consider doing this.

and try training for a 10k.

I'm planning to do another 10k soon, and probably another in october.

Then maybe a half marathon next year. I'd like to do the full marathon but it'd be a real challenge mentally as well as physically.
