Ignore the fool, if you are pleased with the results yourself then thats all that matters, people worry to much about what other people think these days.

I agree with Rachel just work at your own pace and forget about what the head groundsman is doing.

Your break down is actually quite good and something that you should go to higher authority about. Show what kinda savings you can make for the school, stress how important you feel the schools looks towards its image etc...
Kiss the right arses and it won't be long before your boss is shafted and you get his position.
Or it'll go the other way like it does here, you do all the work, the brown nosers get all the perks.. The people that actually work get nothing.....
Consider if it could also cost you your job as well (but if your boss is on a much higher wage....).
Its a risk, but could improve everything, or ruin it. Which way it'll go depends on the company/business (or school in your case).
