Following from the other thread about speed cameras, what do you think would make the roads safer.
I am of the opinion that the driving test should be a lot harder and be of an advanced driving level including driving with commentary to increase observation. Corning and acceleration techniques etc.
I also like the idea they have in Australia or New Zealand (i think) where if the driver is inexperienced or under a certain age they are limited to how many people can be in the car etc. i.e. 4 young mates in car on Sat night.
Almost every serious accident I have heard of has been caused by another factor such as overtaking on a blind corner, drunk, not reading the road/conditions etc. I will admit that speed can make an accident worse, but if you address the other factors first the accident would never happen
discuss
Keen to hear other peoples view

1. Better road ie. No potholls, not this new smooth shit they are putting down coz it increases your stopping distance FULL STOP (wet, all most wet, greasy, even when its dry).
2. Trees next to the road should be kept a cirtain distanse away from the road and maintained.
3. NO OLD PEOPLE (over 60) ON THE ROAD FROM 8AM TO 10AM AND 4PM TO 7PM AND AT THE WEEK END
4. The speed limit round all schools MUST be 20MPH. Even then some times that is too fast.
5. Drink driver should be SHOT.
6. You should get 3 points on your licence if you sit in the overtaking lanes on the motorway. 1, DRIVING 2, Overtaking 3, Overtaking.
7. Speed limit on the Motorway should be raised to atleast 80.
Not that i've ever thought about this b4

should also be fined/points for doing 30mph in 60mph road e.g. country lanes as it causes a lot of congestion.
if you don't like doing over 30mph then you should stick to 30mph roads
also should have less speed camera's in one place and more over a distance e.g. every mile (even though i hate speed cameras) as people just slow down for 1 speed camera then boot off to the next one 10 miles away.

I think LESS speed cameras would help, then people could concentrate on the road.
You should only be allowed to drive a smaller engined car until you do an AIM style test (that'd be similar to the motorbike setup now)
Horses, Tractors and Milk floats should be banned from the roads during the day.
Out of those, the harder, more in depth test would be better (advanced car control to stop people jamming the brakes on when they slide on some ice)

i was going to say make it like the bike system!
and i totally agree with slow moving stuff like horses and tractors being time limited! none in the work run and none at lunchtime

Take the people that cant drive off the roads Would stop congestion as well.
More testing - every 10 years. a car is a lethal weapon and your given an almost indefinate license for one - alot can change in the time you own your license. You can pick up alot of bad habits. Its madness, gun licenses are reviewed and so should cars.

Yes but its an easy to stop visual sign that a car is all above bored...the numberplate recognition stuff is ok IF a car passes by a camera...
It would put pressure on non-legal drivers as not only would the police be able to quickly spot them missing but so would members of the public..
Social pressure is far more weighty than police pressure

New drivers should be in restricted cars.
Driving test should be scrapped and be replaced with a series of lessons and you pass when the instriuctor thinks you are good enough.
None of this unlucky if you fail but you pass 2 weeks later nothing has changed.
Refresher lesson every five years where if your not or to std your licence is pulled back down to privisional. (was talking to a chap today who thought you should always stop at a roundabout {what so if its cleart and the chap behind expectes you to go he can rear end you?))
More filter lanes for turning right (to stop rear end shunts)
Filter lanes should be barried off with those fibregalss black red poles with the reflectors on top to stop idiots using filter lanes to overtake.

.
Completely impossible as 30mph roads are usually in town how would you travel from town to town.

My driving instructor always thought that too, or a coursework style system, where you submit a video to an examiner to review.
