Im almost certain its illegal to have them unless its an accident black spot or for the safety of pedestrians. So it must be for some reason.

I know the ones around me (and therefore Andrew) have all been temporary due to roadworks.

There's permanent ones on Dual Carriageway in Northampton, not sure if it's an accident blackspot or not, but I doubt it, it's a 50 limit and pretty much a straight road...

I'm sure there are some of them on the M4 or M6 as well.

There are a couple of sets on the M4 (at junc 11 one set), one set on the M3 at the moment (at junc. 2). I swear im gnna write a speed camera guide 8-)

They're on a stretch of the M42, which I used to drive down regularly, it's crap having to concentrate on your speedo to check your needle hasn't gone above 70, annoying

the police came round doing road safety when my mate was in sixth form and he told me that they said the majority of speed cameras in cheshire are empty as the mechanism with the film and everything in is so expensive, may be similiar in other areas but wouldnt want to chance it

theres some on the a43 in northampton and i've been through them 10mph over the limit and stayed in the same lane and no ticket but then again i think they are traffic monitors

yeah but you also have to check each one because they dont alwasy have cameras one ewach board
