If it gets the fat lazy kids off their computers and joining running and track clubs then it's worth all the billions it will eventually be, the economy as a whole will prosper anyway unless it starts to run into seriously stupid money.

You also can't compare winning the right to hold the olympics to a big metal dome somewhere in Greenwich.

they are investing 9.3billion in the olympics whereas if they invested this much in sport over the years we would have had a much better team to begin with.

Years of under investment in athletics cannot be undone by bringing the olympics to England. these kids are only fat and lazy due to the lack of encouragement and role models availible to them .

I don't agree with the lack of role models.

David Beckham, Michael Owen, Jason Gardner, Kelly Holmes, Steve Redgrave, Jonathon Edwards.... All top people in their fields of expertise. If Steven Redgrave isn't a role model winning 5 olympic golds then I don't know who is.

And what would these kids aspire to? You have to make it easy for them give them a target to go for, the olympics is perfect for London at this time. The government can't just pummel money into sport with no return, in this way they can develop run down areas develop sport and develop the shocking morale in the country and the rest of the world towards this country.

Imo it will be a success unlesss it runs into extremely stupid amounts.

Yes but then the new generation will step up.

I'm not too clued up on my athletics but there is plenty of British talent about. The European Indoor Championships were Britains most succesful ever, finishing top of the medal charts.

Definately. I went to Sydney in 1998, 2 years before they held it, and the country was buzzing. They are certainly reaping the rewards now too.

Gatlin?

On July 29, 2006 Justin Gatlin told the media that he had been informed by the USADA that he had given a positive doping test in April the same year. He did, however, claim his innocence in the matter: ":I cannot account for these results, because I have never knowingly used any banned substance or authorised anyone to administer such a substance to me."

On August 22, 2006 Gatlin agreed to an eight year ban from track and field, avoiding a lifetime ban in exchange for his cooperation with the doping authorities, and because of the "exceptional circumstances" surrounding his first positive drug test.

Not really a role model is he?

I'm sure if the idiots duped into the sensationalist headlines could actually understand the cost breakdowns weighed up against the potential benefits there wouldn't be a fuss created tbh.

I see its doubled since they first announced it then, no suprise really.

Look at the Dome, Wembley, Channel Tunnel, all went massively over budget and way past their completion dates. This country is a worldwide joke when it comes to things like this.

I sometimes wonder about these tree hugging types that moan about the defence budget, they only have the freedom to moan about it because the heavy artillery is in place to protect their civil liberties. Instead of the sunshine and lollipops they should open their eyes to the real world.

I'm glad we are hosting it. Yes its costing a lot but there are soooo many things that has similar sort of money spent on it that are complete screwups by the gonverment i.e. Child Support Agency that this will actually be better money spent.

It is costing a lot but then there will be lots og good stuff to come out of it - jobs, tourism a decent sporting infrastructure which has been under-invested for sooo many years in this country.

Many might say I don't like sports so why should I pay, its the same as saying I don't like my council tax paying for X as it does nothing for me, thats life not everything they do will benefit you.
