Thinking along to lines of Quantity surveying- to progress onto maybe project manager, something along the lines of property management
Eventually hoping to earn enough to go into property developing
Having a year out to see how life in work treats me..... then i have to decide whether or not to go to uni to study quantity surverying and property/commercial developement/management
Anybody here in this line of work..... or studying for a degree along those lines
Is it necessary to go to uni or can i get on the job training.
How much work is on offer?
Salarys?

Go and learn things in the building trade, best thing imo if you want to be a property developer...

what I was thinking he should do.
He'd be best getting a job with a builder/developer, saving his money over that year or two and then have enough for a deposit for his first house.

Yup, the more contacts/knowledge youve got in the building trade are better than any degrees, saves you the cost of labour!

True, thought about that when i left school, but the money would be poor for first few years and i'd want to become self employed soon as.
Whereas the money would be good with this and i'd be happy to live of that wage, i think.

either way the money will be shite at first.
You either spend a few years at Uni paying for all he fees and earning shite and then have to work for someone earning money to have enough for a deposit to go on your own. Or a few years earning and saving to come out with money in your pocket to work for yourself.

Was thinking of trying a trade in my year out before uni, but they'd probably want you for two years to complete an apprenticeship no doubt

no need to do a trade. Just try and get a job with a general builder/developer doing different types of jobs, that way you'll get good experience at all aspects which is what you need really.

yeah, kind of.
Your ideal would be mirroring a developer...helping organise the workers, helping with some of the actual work, helping manage budgets, etc. That would give you all the experience you need, aswell as teaching all you'd learn at Uni, along with earning you money and making priceless contacts.
Other than that even working with a general builder doing work would give you some great experience.

In a field like that, if it is just developing for yourself you want to do in the future, then there is no need for Uni as experience would be much much better.

Theres not many openings for QS without having a degree, the few positions there are, are not very desirable.
