Dad's had a bit of a fiasco regarding his Company car. The Company are now giving him the chance to Opt out, which will mean an extra £500 per month on his salary plus less tax. Dilema is he will have the upkeep, petrol etc to pay for. Any advice what he should do, and if he decides to go for it what type of car should he go for?

If he will be covering a lot of miles I would stick with the company car...less hassle etc worrying about breakdowns and insurance etc...
If not...then go for it

Personally...I would stick with the company car...
£500 a month sounds a lot...but is soon ate up by insurance...car payments (if he gets a loan)...petrol (expecially on 20k a year)...tax...tyres...he would probably be left with about £100 a month left over??
Then if anything breaks he's gonna have to fork out...
I would stick with the company car myself...just make sure its a decent company car...

yes
Therefore thats a no no...
If he really wanted to make money out of opting out....I would go for a New Corsa CDTI or a base spec astra CDTI...
Even then I reckon after all things paid for your talking around £200 left over profit from the original £500

To work this out you need to take into account:
Cost to buy/finance/HP a car.
Insurance for him & Isa.
20k miles worth of diesel cost at current rate, assuming 50mpg???
Servicing/maintenance/tyres/non warranty repairs.
Road Tax.
MOT depending how old it is.
Work that out over a year then subtract it from the £6k he will get from the work........can maybe add the tax he paid before aswell to balance it out!!
£6k isnt alot to run a car on tbh!!

pcp on a leon 1.9tdi stylance works out at about £400 a month over 3years including service, maintenence and tyres, based on 20k p.a. based on a standard car at rrp. After the first year, would be 2years RFL to pay for. final rental of 4860.
what would insurance set him back? £400? could always look at a lower spec reference to save money on the whole thing.....

Is this because he got an older car rather then a brand new one

Would they not pay him business mileage? What ever they pay him for it you can claim 40p per mile for the firt 10000 business miles and then 25p a mile after that, back from the tax man.
Ive opted out and bought an audi convertible but; with my companies scheme i have just over £1000 a month to play with after diesel!
