apparently the moon was being lit by light from the sun after it had passed through the earths atmosphere, so the light wasnt completly obscured

light filtering round the edges of the earth, being filtered through the atmosphere turns the light red,
its like if you switch a light on in a bedroom the landing will still bit lit up somewhat from the light filtering out even though you cant see the actual bulb
