they really could be any type of Piranha at that size, but more than likely Red Bellies.
If so they can be kept in shoals, depending on the tank size. They say around 1 per 20Gal (US) of tank space when fully grown, but when smaller you could have a few more easily.
They WILL eat other tank mates when they are a little larger (2" or so) but will attack their fins at smaller sizes. And they will grow from a size of 2p to about 6-7" within a year with proper care.
They are easy to keep fish, and great in shoals so would say get them if you can upgrade their tank in the future

Oh...and as for food...they will eat most meats (raw chicken, beef heart, white fish, prawns, mussels, etc.) aswell as other fish if you decide to feed them live foods!

They are all silver with just two rows of black spots with black on the fin tops, i take it the colour changes as they mature?
See the birchirs too small to go in the bruiser tank and they seem to grow slowly so i dont want him getting munched.
hmmm tempted, wonder if i could aquire another tank lol, last time we seen these they were eyeless as the guy forgot to feed them before they were getting shipped.

Yeah, you start seeing colour after they get to a few inches, which really doesnt take long as they grow like weeds upto small adults at 7-8".
I wouldnt buy injured ones, as they will just get eaten by the stronger ones in the tank.

it depends on your tank size for how many, no less than 3 and no more than 9 or so unless you plan for a 100 Gal tank in a years time.

it does happen fairly often, you need to make sure certain things are right (tank size and feeding routine) before getting them or they will just chew down on each other oven time.

Right got two, all they had left.
After all the farting about put them into the tank and the birchir decided thay looked very nice and into his mouth one went. Managed to catch them and no damage is done so now they are in a separate bit of the tank till they get bigger.
The little birchir is still stalking about wondering how he can get them. Hes gonna get a shock when they get bigger

I would try to get another one atleast before they get large. Two have been known to fight until the other is dead, so 3 is always the min number to have really.
