It got me thinking, when we're in the womb, we're kinda submerged in fluid. Why does the baby not drown? Please excuse this question as i'm quite drunk

Not a clue but on The Abyss they used the same fluid in their suits and they didn't drown

Baby gets it's oxygen through the blood supply in the umbilical cord, which is from the mother's heart/lungs, so the baby doesn't actually 'breathe' as such.

That's why they smack you when you come out, to get you crying, and therefore breathing.

And also, that's why babys can swim underwater, while the breath holding reflex is still there

It's worth noting that drowning only occurs as normal water does not contain a sufficient percentage of oxygen to pass through the lung tissues. By saturating a fluid with oxygen (ie what you see in The Abyss), you can actually breathe liquid.

This is especially handy for extremely deep diving as the pressures would mean that your lungs would be crushed if they were simply full of gas.
