ive got a gsi with a c16xe in it. the only differance i can see is that mine has an air mass sensor! ive heard that the c16xe (pre-ecotec) engines are quiker. is this true and why?

C16 - 109BHP
X16 - 106BHP
Not much difference in engine. C16XE has a better head design and no emissions junk. The X16 uses a MAF sensor as opposed to an air flow sensor.

C16 has higher compression of 11.0:1 rather than 10.5:1, makes peak torque and power 500rpm lower than the X16. slight differences between the head, no EGR for the C16XE, most probably the reason for slightly better performance. but on the road it is not noticable. a younger and fitter X16XE would have the edge...

Inlet ports are different.
Monkey, there are a LOT of differences on the road. C16 pulls much harder mid range all the way up. It really is the better engine no matter what some say.
Also can gain up to 10bhp over the X16 unit according to SBD...
A guy we knew had a SPOTLESS standard M reg GSi, he drove Donnas with 60k+ on it and noted how jealous he was as it just pulled so much harder than his.
His was serviced every few thousand as well, he was head mechanic at a Vx dealer as well.
Only issue is the C16's are getting old, piston rings are giving up and can cause serious issues. Even after rebuilds, they still seem to have problems.
Best bet, cash permitting, go buy a brand new one from Vauxhall like Rob Lee did.

well the mug i brought it off was sellin it cheap, coz of high mileage(129k) but he couldnt had looked through the reciepts properly. there one that comes to nearly 4k from a vauxhall dealer. it says investigate broken cambelt and replace engine. and theres a certificate from "vauxhall engine exchange"so it had a new engine at 98k. has any one heard of the vauxhall engine exchange?

You give them an engine + cash and they give you a new one. I think.

yes better engine, and it might feel different in the way that it delivers the power, but in real world driving it is no quicker. jeez it only makes 2lb/ft more peak torque. thats negligible

Ahh but you should know whats taken on a RR should never been looked into too much. Its how its delivered. It may only make a peak of 2lb ft more, but overall, in any gear, at any RPM the C16 will pull harder.

ive owned both the x16xe gsi and the c16xe gsi
they were the same on the road in standard form. nothing at all in it
the 2lb/ft wont make any difference whatsoever at any rev range.

what 2lb/ft more thats like comparing the horsepower between 2 ants scrabbling for the same crumb
