Does anybody know what happens currently?

Is it done there and then or is it back to a week again?

It's different every time I do it.

They usually let you put it on there and then (you have to do it within 48hrs) and they send your documents off to be changed over. I did mine a few week back and they printed off a new MOT certificate for me and gave me the new tax disc there and then. Just the V5 had to go to the DVLA Swansea to be changed over.
