Evening Folks, im in a bit of a prediciment and wondering if i could have anymore opinions.
Last week i brought a Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works from a dealer, i am pleased with the car, build quality, peformance etc, however i was unsure of how old the oil was so i brought the recomened oil and filter and changed it myself (im quite competent at this sort of thing)
However soon after the car started making a tapping noise after 2k revs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th up untill it cant be heard due to the sound of the supercharger and exhaust (about 5k)
I got in touch with the dealer who has paid to have BWM investigate the car, have it on the roller etc today. They have consequently given a report sayin that they cannot find anything wrong with the car or engine, and therefore there is no more the dealer can do for me.
Im due to go and pick the car up tomorow but do not feel confident that the problem has been sorted because BWM havnt replaced anything therefore it must still be making the noise, wher do i go from now...?
Is it ok to tap? Do they all do it? Did i just not notice it before? Has the oil change made it more noticeable? Am i worrying fo nothing?
I would hve posed on a mini forum but there all a bit crap tbh

Did you use the right oil for starters? I take it you did'nt put too little in or too much? You positive its a new noise since you did the work.

Im pretty sure that is since the oil change, and the place where i brough it from, the guy owns a Cooper S and recomended some Lucas high prformance fully synthetic which he uses in his. Although i prehaps did put too little in for a matter of 50 miles and for anyone who owns a mini will know how hard the dipstick is to read

I drove a Cooper S around Rockingham, can't say it sounded tappety.
Get BMW to do an oil change so you know it has been done correctly and they'll know exactly how much to put in - may be ask for an oil pressure test too?!
Better still, take it to the John Cooper Works headquarters, as they'll probably investigate it better than just plugging it into a machine.
If it's any help, my 12v has sound really rattly in this cold & foggy weather on start up (not once warm though) so it may just be coincidence.
Oh, and you should have a years dealership warranty therefore just get them to sort the problem out - although I bet you told them you did an oil change yourself? Also, I know this is applicable for BMW's but if the car is within 1k miles (iirc) of its next service, it has to be done under the BMW Used Car Network policy - make sure it's up to date etc.

Cheers Dean, didnt tell them i changed the oil, and i have 90 days warrenty with the car as it was a local dealer rather than BMW. John Cooper Works Headquarters sounds my best bet as there sure to know if theres a problem. Not sure about the carbon canisters steve but heard a roumour about dodgy harmonic balancers(crankshaft Pulley) but the dealer wont replace this as BWM have told him the cars fine, grrr

You're lucky you told them you didn't do an oil change - if the 90 day warranty isn't up then they should be investigating. JCW headquarter is in Surrey somewhere I believe, so quite a trek from where you are, especially if the engine isn't running nicely.
Give them a call first, may be able to diagnose over the phone.

Yeh the filter took me a few hours, really annoying but did it properly in the end, the sound is like a card in a bike spoke type noise if that makes sense, if gets faster with the sound of the engine and only happens when the car is under load, hence no tapping on tickover or when reved standing still.

Had countless probs with my JCW (12,000 miles) new sc, gearbox, sun roof etc etc list went on and on. Has it any BMW warrenty left or is it just the garage? If so they are usually great and should replace parts willy nilly to sort a problem.

Does it have a plastic tray underneath that you had to remove, if it does'nt do it standing still maybe you have'nt fitted it properly and its touching a drive shaft or something else while moving?

If it was something really serious like top end I should imagine it'd make a noise whilst idling - my girlfriends Fiesta does, then again I'm no expert.
Have BMW checked their system to see if it has had any engine problems in the passed? Does it have a full service history?
