I'm fed up of letting my mind waste away into a repetetive drone of mushy pulp from day to day life and want to learn stuff, mentally, then concentrate on physical stuff later.
Looking at learning another language(Italian), just wondered if other people on here do any sorts of evening classes, open university courses etc? Just curious tbh!

easiest way to learn a language is to be surrounded by people using it...so evening classes or tutor/friend who can speak it is much better than open uni courses.

Customer at work today said about this michael tomas chap who does language tapes(cd's) Just looked on his website Robin, and think I requested a 'free trial' 1hour cd! Will wait a few days and see what comes in the post. Supposed to be pretty good. But it is just learning to speak it, not write etc. I dont care about that for now, just wanna be able to impress the italian waitresses when im in a restaurant ordering some lovely fancy food! (and speak to people when im out there next month)

Learn spanish corb, much more useful  Plus I just started teaching it  You can download language learning CDs from bit torrent too, i just got one to help the guy im teaching spanish to, let him do that in his own time for more practice, and I go over corrections and grammar etc with him. Said it loads of times on here but im moving to spain next year too for about 9 months, so should be pretty fluent when i get back. There was a thread not that long ago on here about learning another language, ill see ifi can find it

Strangely enough, the figures of the number of language speakers was in our lecture today about the future of the spanish language  According to the SIL (Summer institute for linguistics) in 1999 the most widely spoken language in the world was Chinese with 937,132,000 speakers but then next is Spanish with 332,000,000 and English with 322,000,000. German is 10th on the list, with 98,000,000, followed by French with 79,000,000.
This means Spanish has about twice as many speakers as French and German comined, seems strange that it isnt usually taught in schools instead of the traditional choices. Plus spanish women are so much fitter than french and german on the whole, another good reason to learn it

I got a Learn Italian set from Bit Torrent, and it's quite good. There's 3 levels, each one is split into 30 or so lessons, each of which is 25-30minutes long. It's all in MP3, so I have them on my iPod. I'm going to see how I get on with it before I try any proper lessons.
