Well, it all depends. I used to have two but thats because I was sometimes very busy and I didn't get much of a chance to spend time with them. If you won't see them sometimes get two, if not, one will do imo

Edit: The reason I say that is because they keep each other company if from the same litter

ive got two female gerbils from the same litter, they are well cool and are always looking after each other.
