needed to take a trip to the dvla office, wasnt fun.

spent 1 hour in busy traffic through newcastle town centre to get there, needed to go to re-tax the 1.8 Sri as I didnt get a V5 for it when I bought it (was an car that belonged to the BAF british armed forces)

anyway, when I got there I was told that the DVLA do not have a record of the car as the plate on it belongs to the BAF. then I found out that they want the plate back which is fair enough and was told I had been driving an unregistered car with an invalid tax disc for the last 4 months

was assigned a new Reg number there and then. so as it stood the car was untaxed. had to buy a new tax disc there and then and had to show the Insurance document (which obviously had the old reg on it) and they would give me a tax disc as I didnt have an insurance policy relating to the new registration

also advised me not to drive the car home as I could risk a fine for not being taxed and 6 points for driving without a valid insurance policy and unregistered number plates. Told me I had to get written proof from the insurance company, said a fax would be ok.

so I rang the insurance company there and then and changed the details over to the new Reg and asked them to send a faxed copy of the new policy over to the DVLA office I was at (cost me £12). when the fax arrived they still wouldnt give me a tax disc as they then claimed they dont accept faxed documents. when I asked what I was supposed to do they said wait for the new insurance docs to come in the post (7-10 days with the car off the road) and then come back.

after a lot of fuss and arguing managed to get a tax disc and had to tax the car from the start of this month they make it harder for people that actually WANT to drive a taxed car these days!

woman I was dealing with was the most unenthusiastic grumpy bitch as well. the type that instead of answering your questions just looks at you with a stupid look on their face.

Dont get a V5 if you buy a car from someone in the army, you get a BFG certificate.

good news is that the new V5 will show thecar as being first registered in november 2006 with me as the 1st owner. that will be fun trying to explain when I sell the car seeing as it now has a 54 plate on it
