i'm in my first year of uni and will hopefully pass this year. gonna be working in the summer so will need a car but i'll also be in private accomodation next year so i might aswell take it with me. i'm 150 miles from home and hate catching the train back.

prices will obviously differ from now until then but has anyone got any cars in mind i could buy for less than £1000 and no bigger than a 1.2 on a petrol engine. must be R reg or newer so my private plate can go on it. parents will probably give me some money to it so could probably go some more.

so far i've got

corsa b 1.0 or 1.2 8v/16v
ford fiesta 1.25 zetec

I'd get an R-Reg or above Diesel Corsa/Clio

Speaking from experience, don't really go for a 1.0 as you're quite a way from home - a 1.2 16v is much more comfortable at cruising.

The Zetec engines found in the Fiesta's are prone to burning a lot of oil without drivers knowing, resulting in nackered engines. The parts are like rocking horse shit and new engines extremely expensive.

So yeah, a 1.2 16v Corsa would be great.
However a 1.0 will give you cheaper insurance and ever so slightly better fuel economy.

would prefer to get a 1.2 16v TBH but as you mentioned the benefits of cheaper insurance and slightly better fuel economy are an advantage to getting a 1.0. hadn't thought about a clio so might look them up.
