I have recieved the insurance settlement from when i hit the Merc in March.
He has claimed £8900 for repairs and car hire. It seemed a bit high, so i rung Highway. Half of that value was for car hire.

so I'm guessing settlement equates to you paying for it to save going through your incurance??
get a proper breakdown on costs of parts, etc... I had this when I swiped the front of a new Avensis a good few years back, the bodyshop were charging for things which didnt need changing like a rear door (when I hit the front quarter of the front wing on the OTHER SIDE) and also charging like £8 for a gromet, etc

Paul, the insurance has paid it. They sent me a letter stating what the final figure was.
I nearly fell over. There's a couple of bits i'm unsure of: -
Parking sensors
Fog lamp
Bonnet - That's the main one
Crossmember
Air-Con condensor - Hows this affected by a fucked bumper?
External Temp sensor
All that was up with the Merc was wonky headlight, bumper cracked.
But, I suppose it was my fault and all I have to pay is the excess.

I don't see the problem here anyway, the insurance were happy to fork out all of that and as you said, all you have to pay is the escess, which you pay not matter how much they claim.

In a way, i shouldn't be bothered.
But, when i call around for insurance and tell them theres a claim for £8900, there gonna laugh at me

Never knew that John.
I hope it doesn't make a difference.

halifax and barclays insurance dont ask how much the claim was iirc and they've been the cheapest for me the last 2 years.

if they leant him a merc as a hire car than the last one i rented when i worked at avis was £1400 for 2 weeks so depending on how long he had it's quite possible the hire charges where that high

I wouldn't have thought the value of the claim would make any difference....it wasn't your 'fault' you hit a merc....it could just as easily been 20 year old junker.
With regard to the hire car cost.....that doesn't surprise me one little bit.
He would have been given a similar car as a hire car...probably from the second he took the car in for assessment....given the insurance loss adjusters take time to look at the car....agree the works....get the works done....
All takes time
