I agree with Ally, get some money saved and wait until your relationship is that little bit stronger, see where you're at then and make a decision based on that.
It's too early to tell at the moment I think. You have more important issues to think about other than money.

Renting is only dead money if you have the option to buy straight away, which we don't. There's no way I could pack my bags down here, then BUY a house up there. I'd rather rent a furnished flat for 6 months, then see what happens. I know two people that have gone and bought a house with a partner before living with them first and it went tits up. Now I know that cost more than it would to rent for 6 months and find out for certain if its going to work. I realise thats only 2 examples, but they are pretty close mates and it messed them up, wouldnt want to suffer that. There's no alternative than to rent, as the distance we have between is us so great. Anyway, this won't be until next year and even with renting I could put a good few hundred away each month towards a deposit on a house to buy. I'd also sell my car if needed be to raise further cash. If we did go through with this then we'd have been together about 2 years nearly, with distance, which imo makes it stronger. Thats just my 2 cents anyway, as i'm the other half to this equation

^^ exactly my point Nath.
In the space of 6months the amount you'd spend on rent, and the amount you'd spend if you bought and things went tits up would be similar, if not cheaper to rent. It would cetainly be less hassle if things went wrong as would mean no selling the house, splitting everything you bought, etc. whoch could get messy.
