My mate has just acquired a 1987 Golf Mk2 1.6 to work on as a project.

its in quite good condition, needs a respray but the interior is all original and in very mint condition.

The engine however is very dirty and grimey, brown and oil looking!

know i know we can't clean it up so its like a mirror but what products are there out there that u can use to clean old metal, bring it back up as best as possible???

cheers

Gunk spray is good which ive been using, got it from Halfords which was around £6. you just spray it on, then leave it for a bit and wipe off, or you could get some machine type products and hose it all off but i wanted to be sure my car would start afterwords!

p.s my little bro has just bought a 1991 golf mk2 1.6 8v and it sounds the same condition! bodywork is almost mint, interior is mint gti spec and engine bay is oily, rusty, and grimey lol and only cost £800

I've tried Gunk and wasn't that impressed tbh. Halfords engine cleaner isn't too bad.
