just got an insurance quote for the two and they differ by about £200 so really i can afford either. according to the back of total vauxhall the 1.8 has 123bhp and goes to 60 in 8.5 seconds and 130 flat out. The 2.2 however is 144bhp and goes to 60 in 8.2 seconds and 135 flat out. for such an engine size difference there is not a lot of difference in them in my eyes. which do you think would be best to go for.

Go for the 2.2 if you cant get the turbo imo, it has alot more torque and the reason the 1.8 is quick to 60 is its gearbox. The 2.2 will have much better in gear acceleration

2.2 is torquier, but the gear ratios are different to the 1.8, so in gear they are fairly similar
you'd be best driving both, and seeing which you prefer
the 2.2 will cost you more to run though

I went for the 1.8. Not a lot of difference in performance (that I needed anyway) and the rest of the spec is very similar too. But slighter cheaper to buy, slightly cheaper to insure, slightly cheaper to run... it all added up for me.

there does not seem to be a great deal of difference in the prices. there seem to be more of the 2.2s about as well

i like the 2.2 engine, but its thirsty, i think i'd have a 1.8, purely to save money on insurance and petrol
