Its 3 years after the date the car is registered i beleive, and i dont think they send you anyting, you just have to do it.

If you car has always had 12 months tax on it since new then your tax will be due when the MOT is due.

Just to confuse matters, what would happen if say i bought a brand new corsa and left it stood in my garage unregistered for 5-10 years then registered, would this mean that it wouldnt need an mot for a further 3 years??

Well, there could be rules and such against doing something like that, but i think the 3 years would apply from then. Same way the corsa would get the lastest reg prefix too, even if its x years old.

No as it would be after 3 years from when the car was made/sold to you so would need one when you went to put it on the road.
