But isn't that going to make him gain more weight thus giving him more work to do in the gym?

No a positive nitrogen balance will provide the right conditions for muscular atrophy and recovery.

Bit of a hijack but it appears that Steve has got thi info he needs....

If Im looking to bulk up am I right in thinking that I need to increase my calorie intake? If so what is the best food to increase my calorie intake? Obviously I dont want to massively increase my fat intake at the same time.

Increase intake in all carbs, lean protein and healthy fats mate. Try to ingest about 50% of your cals in carbs, 35% in protein and 15% in fats approximately.

Calorie dense complex carbs such as Oats/Porridge are useful to increase your calorie intake. Eat 6-7 small meals a day and make sure you get a decent protein intake in each to maintain a positive nitrogen balance and therefore remain in an anabolic state.

Increase your calories by 250 above maintainence and see how you go, then increase by 500. If you are putting on more than 1.5 lb per week you are probably bulking too fast and gaining unwanted fat.

If you are struggling to eat a lot you can supplement with weight gainer shakes.

Make sure your routine is up to scratch too. Check out www.bodybuilding.com.
