I think the protective stuff is designed to stop the window from bending a certain direction, where as window tinting film doesn't have that quality.
Although tinting film would be far better than nothing. It would save most of the mess of broken glass inside and also offer some form of resistence. Not to mention look better and block sun rays from fading interior colour.. 
But tints are illegal on the front..

No offence but you dont need security film on a standard Astra just keep your valuables out of sight.

Security film doesnt prevent break in's its there to hold the glass and prevent people grabbing something of value out the back of a car such as TV's etc
Do you actually plan on leaving stuff on show then? If your that paranoid invest in a decent CAT 1 alarn rather than security film.
Also Mindless vandals are more than likely to key a car than smash the window why dont you get that venturi shield and coat the whole car in it?

did you read the post? il start again shall i....lately in car park at work, been series of people smashing windows and trying to steal stereos mainly out of cars. this film stops the glass from shattering holds it together, vandal cant get in through window without great force. this car park is busy from 9am through until 10:30 at night, if a vandal were to take 10+ attempts at window to get in, or have to piss about with locks, they WOULD be caught, its literally as quick as they can thing. hence asking if this film is worth it.
1) i dont leave valuables on show, as posted it mainly stereos theyre asfter
2) they may be more likely to key a car, but the trend atm is steroes

I have the stuff.
Its great stuff!!!!
I have the film because my house mate has his window smashed into his corsa c ( totally standard with nothing in it ). The reason ive got it was because im going on the basis they are gonna smash my window so if the first time they hit it, it doesnt break ( probably wont do any dammage ) the alarm will go off and then the common theif will leg it because it will cause too much noise.
Also the other benefits are the fact that the first hit probably wont dammage the window.
Another benefit of the film was, my windows used to shake when i was on the motorway ( gay peugeots for you ) but when i got this film it doesnt even move its great stuff.
As for the emergency people, they can break into the windows it will just take a little longer ( not that long a couple of seconds more ).

oh and to clear up some other things.
Cost: £120 fitted by my local tint place.
Also the film is like winodw tint but about 10 x thicker, the film is an adhesive as such and its so sticky that all of your windows will be taken out and then the film is put on the windows and cut arround because you cant just slide it accross because its so thick and sticky.
