Ive never bothered svm as it was made with no budget and is apprently terrible 
Ive heard that from most people.

Jambo, I can reliably inform you that those people are very gay indeed then mate. 
Heat is exceptional, but unoriginal.
I saw LA Takedown first, and I have to say it is one of my favourite films.
Ignore the critics and reserve judgement until you have watched it yourself mate.
It's a very atmospheric film and is very much of it's time. Some of the shots remind me of glimpses of Miami Vice and Scarface.
To my mind, Mr Mann took his masterpiece and threw loads of money at it a few years later when he was richer, but the end result is no more impressive.
One of the reasons the original works so well, is because the actors are little known or unknown. I expected very little when I first saw it as I knew nothing about it at the time, but was very impressed after my first viewing.
Another cracker from the same period by Mr Mann, is Manhunter. It is the story Red Dragon was based on. If you're a CSI fan you'll be pleased to see William Petersen (Gil Grissom) in the lead role as the FBI agent.
