when its all timed up and you put the bottom crank back on, my mate got me to hold one cam with a spanner so it didnt spin... is that the correct way of doing it ?
Im starting to feel a bit of motivation to fix it 
please help thanks

bottom pulley?
i just put the car in gear with the handbrake on or get a mate to press the brake then tighten it, thats when i did it at home
at work i had a impact gun so just used that

ok so its possible the belt has slipped if my mate just got me to hold a cam which is what he did...

thats how you stop the cam turning when you do it up, as long as its torqued up correctly its ok

you should fit the belt with the lines marked up, tension up the nensioner to the correct setting, rotate the engine 4-5 times by hand, slacken the tensioner and reset the pointer to the 'new belt' position on the tensioner backplate.
rotate the engine 3-4 times by hand again, check timing marks are aligned and tensioner is set correctly again.

you should over-set the tensioner to compensate for the beltslackening up in a couple hundred miles........
yes, hold 1 pully bolt (usually inlet) with spanner to stop it springing round....
dont worry with torquing bottom pully....fkin tight has always worked well for me

yes, the 'new belt' marking is to allow for stretch in the belt.
not tourqeing (sp) the bottom pulley to the reccomended torque then angle tightening it isnt advisable. its takes 5 mins extra to do properly and can save your engine from smashing to bits!
