If you're going to say something, back it up. You can't have an 8 page argument based on what you think is the case.

This sums up the 8 pages, like said sam you've been proved wrong...it's illegal, whether you like it or not!

It's a different situation all together whether or not you get pulled over - if you think you won't then go for it, but this thread is a pre-warning to the fact that there is a chance that you will.

Saying that though, isnt there different shades of tint? And factory tints are never 70-75%, so theres nothing stopping her getting her windows tinted to that level
Then again i've forgot what the original question that sparked 8 pages of the laws on tinting

theoretically, if she could find 5% tints, that would be fine

but it would be a total waste of effort

edit: or whatever percentage of 75% it would take to take it to 70%

Is it 70% of light must pass through the glass or is it 30% of light?....

im guessing it's the former, in which case ive got it completly wrong

edit - yup, i never read the law properly......

70% of light, ie. nearly all of it.

Rob, 5% no good, they're already 75% on the side and 70% on the front to match the regs.

It'll be written on the window normally as part of the manufacturer stamp.

i take it factory tints are always 30% then (ie: 70% visible light?) or can it differ?

If the latter is the case, then surely it's possible for tints to be applied to bring the window up to legal limits?

Factory tint will normally match the regs.

This would mean 75% on the side windows already, so no, additional tint cannot be applied.

I think this might have been cleared up already but this is what the book that many traffic officers carry with them. (just for anyone who is not convinced)

Taken straight out of The Traffic officers companion 15th edition

Construction and Use Regs

Transmission of Light (reg 32)

Windows and windscreens which are required to be fitted (including any tint film or other substance or material applied to a windscreen) must be capable of transmitting light less than-

- Motor vehicles used before 1.4.85, 70% light for all windows
- Motor vehicles used on or after 1.4.85 and trailers 75% light for windscreens and 70% for all other windows.

The popular thing around here is to close a cruise and inspect everyone as they leave.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Ste_Nova/P2120008.jpg

There were a large number of people given fines that night for not only tints but thinks like mis-spaced plates or plates with the wrong font, coloured bulbs etc.

FFS, I've just read all of this thread (no, i dont have anything better to do) You are clearly not understanding what people are trying to tell you

The point you are making about being pulled over is stupid, as im sure 99.999999999999% of the people on this site will speed every single day, and im quite sure they dont get pulled every single time they do this. Just because you are commiting an offence every time you take your car out doesn't mean you are going to get pulled, you may be lucky and never get pulled from now until you stop driving, but one day you MIGHT, and if you do, and they DO happen to check your windows, you MAY recieve a fixed penalty and be asked to remove the film.

Danny - your maths is wrong. The standard card has a VLT of 70%, and therefore tinting it more will take it below this, illegally.

The lower number means less light and thus darker windows. The standard tint is not 30%, this would be very dark indeed.

So 0% will be totally black, and 100% will be no film at all?

I haven't read the thread, but was this realy 9 pages about window tints?

Realy can't see the point in them myself, unless they are the polarised type that keep the heat down.
