I'm gonna be getting a new car later on this year, got around 8k ish to spend.

I want something thats pretty quick, so was thinking about astra gsi/clio 182 etc but the problem is i'm a student and do quite a few miles in my car.

So the question is, is it possible for around 8k to have a nice car with good performance but yet is also economical with ood mpg.

I'm guessin it will have to be a diesel but other than that i dont know.

Clio 172's are actually really good on petrol for a hot hatch, IF you're sensible you'll easily see 30+mpg.

Either 2.2 or 2.0T if you want a bit more power

Go for an SE2 & its a cool colour & you get leather/alcantara interior

Civic Type R? They just started dropping into that price bracket now, and provided you dont drive it hard, you can get pretty good MPG figures from it.

On a 150 mile journey at motorway speeds, me and my mates CTR used the same amount of fuel... and mines a 1.4 16v .

Keep the engine out the Vtec (It's not that slow a car when its out either contrary to popular belief), and it'll return good MPG figures .

i have weighed this option up too mate, you think an Ibiza Cupra would be worse than a CTR or 182?

Depends on your driving style I suppose. The problem with the cupra - as stupid as it sounds- is the fact the power comes in so low, even though thats a good thing .

I think the turbo kicks in at below 2k RPM, and as soon as it kicks in, it'll chuck in loads more fuel to match the air going in. Great for performance and making the engine smoother, but not so good for Economy, as your pretty much always on-boost.

Both the CTR and 182 are VVT, hence the power band is high up in the rev range, so when your only using the lower engine speeds, you should get some good fuel efficency out of the engine .

182 will be better than the CTR I'd presume, due to the reduced weight, but my personal choice would be the CTR, for the reliability and its a much bigger comfier car!

andy just get a valver in your corsa, and dont worry about the milage, xe's are amazing, you floor it and get say 120ish miles to £10, and you take it easy and you get the same milage lol.
