In the good old fashion of corsa petrol gauges being funny, ive noticed mine being alittle strange lately. As most people know, the second half tends to go down faster than the first half, due to shape of the tank i hear. However, mine seems to have bucked this trend lately.

At first, mine used to do this, but the last 2 tanks have seen it happen the other way round. The first 3/4 goes down around normal speed, but once it starts getting low, around the 10 litre mark, it seems to last for ages and ages.

Today was a good example. My car was sitting at around 260 miles on the clock with the gauge showing around 11 litres left (most of this 260 was town milage on a cold engine). I was going out to stratford today (around 40 miles each way) so i was expecting to fill up once i got there. However, i got there, back, to the pub and to the petrol station and at the end of that the guage had just hit the red zone (about the 5 litre mark). So my car says it did 83 miles to some 6 litres of petrol, most interesting is that its a 1.4 8v, not an engine known for being great for mpg.

At the fill up the car took 39.4 litres with 343 miles on the clock. Meaning on a mix of 260 mostly town miles (75% of those are cold engine miles too) to 83 mostly motorway miles it averaged some 39.5 mpg. Is it me, or is that alittle high for a 1.4 8v with so many town miles out of the tank?

That seems ok to me.

For comparison, my 1.2 clio takes the same amount of fuel from empty (£40) and usually shows around 380 or 390 miles.
