Anything we can see has had to travel for millions of years to get to us.
We can't see that far in any sort of high resolution either.
Even if we received alien signals, they could have been sent that long ago that the galaxy they live in has long since been destroyed.

We can't get anywhere significant in a lifetime.
And unless the current models and laws are found to be incorrect we never will be able to.

He knows it because the signals travel at about the speed of light, which would now be reaching starts about what, 80 light years away.

Interview from one of the SETI@Home lot:
"This is certainly not the first time that someone circulates the message that a hot signal has been found without providing the hard facts that everyone can see and check. Of course we all in the SETI community hope that one day a definitive signal is detected; but this is not the same as someone hearing that a "hot" signal has been detected, overestimating or exaggerating the facts. SETI has found millions or much more candidate signals, some "warm" and some "hot". I would like to see more facts and a serious confirmation of the signal by SETI standard procedures before I would like to pay a lot of attention to this "news". I remember hearing this "news" every now and then, often in summer time when news are scarce and stories about Loch Ness etc. get more attention than usual."
