Sitting in the bath i had a read of my corsa's manual (better than listening to the crappy pop charts) And come across a feature on page 68 that says on the C12 NZ, 12NZ, C14NZ and C14SE (my engine) there is a plug which you swap over (turn through 180 and re insert) to tell the engine what octane fuel you are using. From the diagram it looks like its by the drivers side front shocker top mount.
Anybody got any info on what this does? I assume it changes the igntion timing slightly but are there any economy benefits? (i doubt there will be any noticeable performance alterations)

I think it's used on engines that don't have a knock sensor.

its there to stop detonation (pinking)
when you put crap fuel in... whatever the lower octane number it mentions is... then it alters the timing so it doesnt damage the engine
you need it on 95 setting though, or it wont run right

knock sensor detects detonation, and alters the timing to eliminate it
so yes, in a way, its the same
