from Lost Forum
Ok in short. The island is a electromagnetic machine that is suppressed so as not to interfere with what is commonly known as The North Pole, let me explain.
Firstly let me point out that yes I know they where flying from Auz to the US, So how the Smurf are they at the north pole you clown I hear you ask.
If you didn't know there are actually 2 North Poles, 1 geographic and 1 magnetic. It's the magnetic one that’s the important in lost. So do you know how a compass works? That’s right it points to the MAGNECTIC POLE! WRONG!!!!! It actually is repelled and points south. Why? well the magnetic field actually flows from North to South and as magnet field actually repels naturally rather than the miss conception of attracts. It's only when the field is reversed for magnets that they attract (or so I seem to remember from science class).
So then, working on that.
The creators are on record as saying that there was a clue in the very first episode "pilot". So what was the clue? The Polar Bear and why? Well they only live in the North Pole (yes, you will find them in zoo's and Canada etc) but not at the South Pole.
Right, got that. Good.
So from the 2 hour episode 23 (live together, die alone) When Desmond and Locke don't push the button it goes into system failure. Not pressing the buttons doesn't earth a build up in magnetism and creates a stronger electro magnet polarity of the South Pole when compared to the North Pole and makes the island or South Pole attract as that’s what an electro magnetic does. Attract or repel.
Remember Desmond's flashback? He asks why he has to push the button and the bloke he is with says something along the line of stopping the static build up.
Then later when he says he has to insert the key after looking at the sheet he sees that the last system failure coincided with the plain crash.
So that's why everything started attracting and crushing because everything has been built not to attract to the magnetic field. Ever remember the can recycling test where you hold the can to a magnet? What would happen to the world if suddenly the polarity was reversed?
Then remember when the bird with the kid said to Charlie did you not see the lights? What as in The Northern Lights, these are caused by the magnetic fields in real life.
The plane broke up and didn’t crash because it's mainly only the air frame that is made of steel. So as not all the aircraft that would be attracted so that's why it broke up as it would be fighting against its self.
Also remember when Sayed (spelling) was wondering round the island with the compass that wouldn't settle.
Oh and guess the name of the bloke who discovered the relationship between electricity and magnetism? Hans something or other. The Hanser organisation is the company in lost. Coincidence?
So on to the final scene. The 2 blokes appear to be in either Antarctica or the Arctic. Then on the screen with the flashing red light it says "7418880 Electromagnetic anomaly detected" and they pick up the phone and say something like "it's not a false alarm this time" could refer to the last time Desmond did press the buttons then did after a while. So it appeared on the screen then disappeared again?
Oh and the numbers that appear to be important. When you do the sum 4x8x15x16x23x42 it equals 7418880.

Ditto. Whats all this chitter chatter about them dragging it out. Fair enough the mid few episodes of a season arne't as good as the first few and the last few but so what they're still good
