yup you do have to pay. It is possible to get them using a HD freeview box but these are few and far between and also not the cheapest.
If you are lucky enough to be on the london trial then you will be able to get it for free.
To get the latest techonology you have to stump up the cash.

I read somewhere that BBC were going to broadcast the World Cup in HD if England get further than the group stages... this could be utter crap though

All endland games broadcast on SD BBC will be available in HD
That only means 1 game in the league stage but they have first rights on all of englands games in the play offs.
They will also be showing other games as well all of which will be available in SD

Yes you need a HD box and HD TV to watch HD. Think of it in terms of Colour and Black & White.
BBC will show the footy in Standard Definition on its usual channels too though - if thats what your wondering.
