Its not £160. You only pay to assign once, but you do this when you take it off the old vehicle, in advance of assigning it to the next car.
So basically £80 to take it off the yellow one, and then you can assign to the new one at the same time.
If you don't have the car its going on then you need to pay to retain - £25 per year = total of £105 like Dan posted.
If you retain but then sell it or something and need to change the details on it to another person thats also £25. Won't apply in your case if both cars are in your name.
Car must be roadworthy at the time the transfer is done but there is some discretion offered in for transfers done immediately after the car becomes unroadworthy. Your local office will advise of exactly how long you can leave it.

I got L4FFN off my first Corsa after I wrote it off, which is funny now as the Astra made in 2003 comes back as being written off in 1997 when you HPI it.
Depends on the circumstance though. I also know people who have stripped/scrapped cars with them on and lost plates as it wasn't road worthy when presented for transfer.

Yeh does the car have MOT? I think thats all that they are bothered with, the only thing is that if there is a break in tax they are more than likely to requiest an inspection of the car to cross ref VIM's etc. In which case the car needs to be road worthy, however you can request them to you and in your case just say that he car is having rebuild. All depends on MOT really mate
