In the process of repainting some wheels, would like to know when to apply the lacquer,

1. some 1-2 hrs after applying chosen colour or do I need to leave the paint to dry completely, sand it (wet), then apply the lacquer?

2. or just after applying the paint (say15-30mins)?

3. or leave to dry completely, sand it and the apply the laquer?

Also do I need to sand it after applying the lacquer?

thanks

Are you painting metallic or flat colour? You should never colour sand a metalic paint... There is no real reason to color sand the paint if you are laquring anyway.

Whenever I have done spraying I have primed it up and made sure that is very flat. This is the most important part! Then I have painted the colour on in about 3-4 layers. Then I let the colour flash off for about 15-20 mins so that when I apply the laquer it can etch in to the colour and stick so it doesn't peel. I do 3 or so coats of laquer making sure it's got a good build up on it and looks 'wet'. Next thing to do is leave it to dry for over 24 hours. You want to make sure that as much of the solvent is out of the paint, though the paint will remain soft for a week or so. You can then wet sand the paint with soapy water and 2000 grit wet and dry, T Cut or G4 compound. I prefer the G4 stuff.

actually i'm just repainting them...not completely refurbishing....this is my first time doing this and just giving it a try...

i think i will be painting it the same colour of my car...which is star silver...(i think it is metallic then)

OK, will not sand and just lacquer

and use G4 (was in the plan) instead of t-cut

Oh, i'm using only cans from halfords...

Dust it on if you're using rattle cans! Don't use Star Silver, it's a bit too flat... Have a look at the Halfords Alloy paint, much better as it's more pearlescent...

It's er... Silver. But it's better for wheels as it is pearlescent between dark silver and light silver. If you look at most aftermarket wheels they are painted in paint like that. Up to you though

You need to wait for the primer to bry before you can sand it down. Once you have got the primer nice and smooth after wet sanding with soapy water you are good to go. Make sure you wipe the surface with panel prep, meths or alcohol before you carry on to get any dust or contaminents off the surfact.

Thats the kinda thing I was talking about in that pic, you can see how the edges are more defined on those wheels because of the pearlescent paint
