Well yes - Because your foot plants harder on the throttle to get the desired noise 
I didnt think that you do actually push harder on the throttle to get the noise, until i stuck old box back on yesterday and a performace panel filter - No more foot to the floor wasting fuel now 
Can already see the improvement in the fuel needle!
My kit was fubar'd tho!
And had no cold air feed!

ok m8?? Soz if I aint following u properly but r u sayin that the air filter will result in less fuel being used than the airbox?

No, im saying it makes very little difference. . . BUT
And this is a BIG BUT! (Like J-lo big :O)
You want to hear the noise, so u plant your foot to the floor alot more, using more fuel!

yes, I think this is true. When youve got an induction kit you slam the accelerator more than with just a standard intake
So you use a slight bit more fuel

Also, more air is going in to the car, so more fuel is used.
