what Robin said, I have an Isa, and although it doesnt seem you ae putting much away, it soon builds up.
Just set up a direct debit for the 1st of every month perhaps.
I have one with Halifax and i get good interest!

for £50 a month you arent gonna get massive amounts of money coming in, but you can probably get 5% or thereabouts
have a look on the big banks/ building society websites, they all compete with eachother, so their rates get better
also, an ISA is safer than some other investments

Premium bonds? I know my parents seem to love them anyway.

premium bonds are not guaranteed return on the investment. £50 a month isnt really enough for bonds anyway

A few (like 10-15) years ago i would have agreed with that, but to be honest throwing money at a pension before a house is plain daft IMO.
In 50 years time I can't see most people retiring full stop. My best guess is that folks will work as long as they can (doesn't bother me one bit) and when you can't work downsize the house and live off the profits until you snuff it

I pay 5% of my salary, approx £110, a mth into my pension (+ get tax benefits) an company pay in 15% of my salary so thats good ++ company share schemes are great... i pay £30 a mth into ours which usually buys me 1 share and the company give me 1 share for every 1 i buy so its vbasically free money

Each to their own.
I undersand where you are coming from though
Personally I prefered to spend my money enjoying myself when i was younger, since the investment (even with interest) is going to be pretty insignificant in 50 years time.
I now find myself in a position where I earn substantially more than I can spend...and can invest at will.
Believe me im very happy I didn't spend my early years worrying about pensions and saving

Hmmmmm, better.
But I seriously fear that the Govt (whatever colour) is going to tax your lilly arse for buying to let in the future...
Prob tax anything and everything else though
Personally im going to buy somewhere abroad as a nest egg. Not infallable I know, but im going to kick my feet up in the sun, whilst living off the UK stuff.
I might add my game plan involves never being married and no kids though

Perhaps think about less exotic places where tourism is increasing, places in Croatia for example...
Or theres always places like Cyprus, Turkey et al
