end of the day serves him right, but after just passing his test and taking a loan out to buy the car, he's paying for something he wont be able to afford anyway

Light punisment is that. Minimum sentence dished out locally tends to be 18 months with a 3 month reduction on completion of a dd course.

12 months is minimum ban period if he does the TTC course, will reduce it to 9 then, or so I have been led to believe

We call it the DDR (Drink Drivers Rehab) course. Seems he got offered that. Costs about £160. Normal for first timers not much over the limit.
